Greetings to our JMC Journalism, Ethics and Democracy class blog. This blog will create a type of “journalism resource depository” for you and your senior capstone colleagues. Throughout the semester, students will post summaries of Web sites that are created for journalists.

The sites are intended to be informational resources that help journalists do better journalism and better understand the current issues and developments in our profession. This blog will introduce you to a wide spectrum of these sites and begin to acquaint you with the types of information you have available to you and where you can find it.

The summaries posted on this blog should be primarily straight-forward accounts of what you find when you visit the Web site (objective), with a minimal level of analysis (commentary) that is based on the content of the sites. The postings should:

--Identify the Web site and sponsoring group or organization of the site, explain who the group is, its membership and purpose and/or mission.

--Summarize key elements of content on the site. Explain what information you find when you go there (provide some examples). Identify and explain briefly how the site is organized, including regular features, topics of articles and content, the availability of specific databases or reference materials, links to other important sites, etc.

--Summarize how the site can help journalists – when (or for what purposes) a journalist might find the site useful and why.

--Review the site for information about journalism innovation. Identify and briefly summarize content or site features that address issues that help journalists understand current changes in journalism, that suggest ways to think about or practice journalism differently or that focus on current challenges and uncertainties and how journalism can respond to the challenges.

--Rate the site (scale of 1 to 5, with five being excellent, 3 being average, and 1 being poor). Make sure you explain your rating, and that your rating is supported by the content on the site and your summary of it.

This blog should provide a basis for student learning, interaction and discussion.
